IPv6 Deployed for .ORG

.ORG just reached another milestone in its campaign to foster a more robust and secure Internet. Beginning today, July 31, the Internet addressing system known as IPv6 will be deployed for testing, and will shortly be available for full use by registrars.

The reason that this is an important development can be explained as follows, courtesy of the Internet Society web site:

"Internet Protocol (IP) addresses are unique numeric identifiers that are needed by every device that connects to the Internet.

ICANN GNSO Improvements Accepted – Voting Balance Maintained

The GNSO Improvements working group wrapped up its work in a marathon negotiating session on Friday 25 July.

The ICANN Board had told the GNSO to work out a consensus on the structure of the new GNSO Council; if the GNSO could not reach consensus, the Board would make its own decision on the structure.

The good news is that the concept of a bicameral GNSO Council was accepted by all parties.

.ORG Domains Top the Charts with Six Figure Sales

A recent headline caught my eye the other day. It seems recently that .ORGs have been garnering record sales, which is surprising given the current economic climate and the fact that .ORG has really never actively courted the secondary market. However, we are monitoring it because we believe investments in building brand value and differentiation will start showing up first in secondary market results.

Are you aware of your DNS Security Needs?

With all the news lately about a newly discovered DNS vulnerability , the need for DNSSEC is becoming more pronounced perhaps to a more mainstream audience. This recent flurry of news comes on the heels of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry, being approved by ICANN to offer DNSSEC services. We believe the time has come to step up on this important issue for the good and the future of the internet, so we are taking the lead among gTLDs to close this flaw in the DNS.

ICANN Paris – Truly a FESTIVAL Experience

During the 32nd public ICANN meeting in Paris, France, .ORG held a special event for our registrars, board members, advisory council, other registries, and many important people in the Domain Community. Called FESTIVAL with .ORG, we had an exciting night at Les Pavillons de Bercy in Paris on this past Tuesday, the 24th of June. On a warm summer evening, everyone was able to relax and have fun while networking with other ICANN attendees amid jugglers and stilt walkers.

ICANN: Focus on Security

As the 32nd Annual ICANN meeting closes in Paris, .ORG, The Public Interest Registry, continued to use this important worldwide forum to advocate policies that support the mission of .ORG to serve all worldwide .ORGs as an exemplary registry.

A highlight of the meeting was the ICANN Board’s approval of the .ORG proposal to implement Domain Name Security Extensions (“DNSSEC”). .ORG believes the implementation of DNSSEC will significantly advance the security and stability of the Domain Name System. The protection of Internet users and registrants has always been a priority for .ORG.

DNSSEC – So what do we think about RSTEP’s findings?

Some of you may have just learned about the release of the RSTEP recommendations . To give you some background, on April 21, 2008, we engaged the RSTEP process to evaluate our request to officially move forward on our plans to investigate and implement DNSSEC. The RSTEP process has recommended to the ICANN Board of Directors that our request be granted. This is a positive step for longer term improvement to the internet infrastructure.

The rise of the .ORG Community and some extraordinary “World Voices”

It occurred to me when taking over as CEO last July that .ORG has what no other TLD can claim: a real sense of community. True, this is where you can find an awful lot of good content -- but when you look deeper you can glimpse an antidote to the daily news of warfare, and discord, namely, what makes us humane, not just human.
